Abstract

To evaluate the effectiveness of wildlife passages on G7 Beijing-Urumqi Expressway (from Balikun to Wutongdaquan section), 17 infrared cameras were used to continuously monitor 12 wildlife passages from March 12, 2023 to June 11, 2025. The results showed that all wildlife passages were used by wild animals, with an utilization rate of 100%, meaning all passages were used by wildlife at least once. Six species of mammals were monitored, of which five were national key protected wild animals. The relative abundance index (RAI) of goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) and fox (including red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and corsac fox (Vulpes corsac)) was the highest, with 101.50 and 36.07 individually. The RAI of goitered gazelle was the highest in spring and autumn, and that of the fox was higher in spring, autumn and winter. The goitered gazelles are mainly active during the day, while the foxes are mainly active at night. The increase in traffic volume could not significantly limit the use of the passages by the two animals. The overpass and underpass set up at this section are equally important for the crossing of mammals. Currently, no preference for various wild animals has been found. The correlation between the utilization of passages by wild animals and the passage size or habitat factors is not obvious. However, it is significantly positively correlated with human interference, indicating that as long as the animal passage is located at the wildlife migration corridor, even if there is a certain degree of human interference, the behavior of the animals passing through the passage will definitely occur. According to the research results, it is suggested to strengthen the control of human interference at the high-frequency crossing passage of wild animals in the future, so as to create a safe space for wild animals to use the passage.
