Development, Evolution and Analysis of Comprehensive Transportation Theory from Perspective of Systems Engineering

The formation of the concept of comprehensive transportation is the application embodiment of systems engineering ideas in the field of transportation.Applying the ideas, theories and methods of systems engineering to analyze and identify the era problems of comprehensive transportation, and study the internal relationship and interaction between systems engineering and comprehensive transportation can create conditions for the coordination of integrated transportation systems, and it is also a beneficial exploration for the construction of Chinese path to modernization of transportation systems. This article started with an analysis of the ideas and theories of transportation systems engineering, summarized the formation and evolution of modern transportation systems, and focused on explaining the main characteristics of the system theory and practice in the current stage of China′s transportation system, namely the comprehensive transportation stage. It proposed several issues that need to be focused on in the future theoretical research of comprehensive transportation systems, including the evaluation of the development stage, the entry point and foothold of development, tracking research on the technological and economic comparative advantages of various transportation modes, research on new and key application technologies, achievement of carbon neutrality goals in transportation systems, and so on. In summary, the article aimed to promote the continuous reflection, understanding, re-understanding, and improvement of comprehensive transportation theory.
